It could be Somersetshire

The weather was cloudy but warm and dry so I decided to head further north from Pt Montt, although I would have happily had another day there. I wasn't going far, just to some lakes and volcanos. I used the highway to get out of the town but then peeled off to use the back roads, and lovely sweeping roads they are too.

After all the dramatic scenery of the past few weeks it was a surprise to drive through, what could pass for, Somerset countryside. Soft rolling hills, herds of dairy cattle, old fashioned orchards and the like.
When I say it is like Somerset, the bloody great volcano's on the horizon tend to blow that story.. I passed a lovely place on a lake called Frutillar with the Osorno volcano beyond.
The tops of the volcanos were alwas shrouded in cloud & this is the best shot I could get. It may just look like a white cloud but if you look closely you will actually see that this is a snow capped, conical volcano above the tree line.
I got to Orsorno which is quite a big town, rich on agriculture. I parked in the main square and grabbed a sandwich & coffee. A couple of guys had seen me ride in & came over for a chat - about the bike mostly (as always).
They have this strange Cathedral. I think the builder must have gone bust during construction.
I checked in to my hotel which is just outside of Osorno and on the way to the Puyehue Nat Park. Puyehue is the Volcano that has been puffing out ash for many months. You may remember the blog from Bariloche where i took a picture of the ash half way up the poles of road side signs. This is the culprit.

The weather forecast for the morrow was not good so I headed straight to find the beast. It was a good road but the cloud got thicker the closer i got to the mountains. I drove virtually to the border with Argentina but still didn't get a clear view.
I dont even know if this is the volcano! But the evidence in the rivers was pretty strong. What should have been crystal clear water was a grey slurry
You can see high waterfalls through the almost tropical vegetation. Gunnera & Fuschias grow wild in the hedgerows and of all things Blackberries!

That is one for the Guardian letters; "Picking ripe blackberries in March". That should get them hot under the collar about global warming.

You pass lots of places offeirng thermal baths but by now i was getting wet as it was raining pretty hard so i didn't stop for a warmer version of what i was already getting (for free).

  1. Enzo, We are very happy to see you back on air (even if it means the kidnappers did not rate you as a viable investment prospect - knackered old bike etc - or that T, R and M's offer to Wilks was too thin a cut). However, we are pleased to be able to resume our recently acquired passtime of G & T while following your track on Google Earth - followed by breakfast (that one just for Wilks !).
Your man David M is clearly an educated chap who knows his beers and brewers well. I agree that a Fursty Ferret would also be sufficently good bait. Also impressed that he rates a Badger Ale above an old (or new) pair of brogues with nails in the sole - good man.
I would support a real Ale reunion on your return - followed by a bottle of wine or a lemoncello or three if Wilks makes it too !!
We continue to be impressed with the scenery, beauty and scale of the countries you are visiting and are honoured to be sharing it with you. Best, Henry

    1. The ransom notes came through just fine, they obviously realised there was no point holding him when nothing came back, you know i actually burnt out a shredder motor on those notes, wish the bandito's would upgrade to email, so much faster to delete than endless paper shredding even if was only going to take a fiver to sort the whole kerfuffle out.

Back on topic, i will vouch for a ferret, good ale and there will be no drinking of lemon cello in my absence

    2. Not only did the Kidnappers not rate me as a viable investment - they actually gave me $50, wished me good luck and showed me the way out of town! You have no idea how that affects your self esteem!
David Melaniphy (affectionately known as Smelly Fanny for obvious reasona) is the nicest man in the world but is dangerous to go drinking with (dont ever give him a Scotch).

    3. Better not be absent then Tom - and really sorry to hear that your plans to stop Delbert SKIing have so far failed. Cheers, Henry.

  2. Kev,
Slightly lyrical and almost poetic this time around are you going soft or is being back on yout tod getting to you?
Henry might like to try some of your old favourite which I recollect as being Wadworth 6X - they also do Swordfish which is 6X with the addition of rum (for a cold night no doubt!) Alternatively a must for him is Henry's Original IPA or maybe Henry's Smooth but defintely The Bishops Tipple.

    1. David, we are in danger of taking over the dear boys blog and turning it into a camra ad - which will never do !!
      Cheers, Henry.

    2. I can only apologise for the change in prose. I have been reading bloody Don Quixote for weeks now and he talks in such a fashion it has infected me. I will be pleased when i have finished the bloody book!

You & Henry could be very dangerous company amongst a selection of beers! If you feel like coming to Le Mans in July I am sure he will be delighted to sample some brews with you (probably before, during and after the race)!

Ahh for a pint of 6X - you have a great memory, how the hell do you remember things like that!

Good job you didn't take Spanish any further otherwise they mught have got the right figures about net worth! Over here you draw $200,000 out of a cashpoint and it lasts about 2 days! So when you told them I was worth millions - it wouldnt have moved them much - hence the $50 tucked in my top pocket as i was shown the way out of town.

    They use a $ sign for peso's. 750 = £1

  4. Henry & David - hi Jack away. I fear me & you lot are getting blog fatigue so a diversion would be most welcome.

what news Le Mans - are you still in ?

  5. Yes, still in. The little Freench s**t is all sorted. A couple of test days to check out a potential new co-driver by the name of Nick Ball, a longer gearbox for the Mulsanne with the smaller Avon Tyres and bingo - all should be fine. See you at the Legoland Hotel.

    1. well done, lets hope that is the last time any such thing happens again. Remind Nick not to show the old boy up & lose the drive!

  6. Headline from todays BBC Website:
    "Alien invaders threaten Antarctic fringes
The fringes of Antarctica are being invaded by alien plants and tiny animals, scientists have found, with the average visitor carrying 9.5 seeds."
Kevin I assume the timing of this report is entirely coincidental and that you are not guilty of carrying seed that far south let alone spreading it?

  7. Dear Henry Clara, only wondering last weekend if you had got an entry to Le Mans this year, have managed to talk Delbert in allowing me to go along and so look forward to seeing you again in July. (Kev's oldest, more reserved brother)

    1. Hi Phil, Please qualify "more reserved". I recall you drinking wine and/or beer at the hotel in Banbury so assume the normal (abnormal??) family genes are firmly in place. It will be excellent to see you at Le Sarthe in July. Henry.

  9. Greetings from salt lake city! Just had to attend the Hiscox post mid year ski trip to park city. Skiing was washed out yesterday so what else do you do but go to lunch at 11.45am and finish in some grungy ski bum bar at 1.30am. Will I ever learn. Great to follow the blog, travel safe mate and keep the blog going.

    1. Glad to see you are still turning the wheels of industry as hard as ever!
Some people may get the wrong impression of the city given your note!

How was the mid year & Greengrass? I can't say I missed it much.

Love to all & hope you get out of the bar and on to the slopes tomorrow
      Cheers
